10 Questions I Always Get Asked as a Baker & Content Creator

Hi, I’m Shivesh!
If you’ve ever been curious about what it’s like to turn a hobby into a full-time job—or how it feels to bake cakes for a living—this one’s for you. Over the years, I’ve been asked so many questions about baking, content creation and how I manage both.

So today, I’m sharing honest answers to the 10 questions I get asked the most. Whether you’re an aspiring baker, a creator or just someone who loves dessert—I hope this gives you a little insight and a lot of inspiration.

1. How did you get started with baking?

It all started with my *grandmother*. I have such vivid memories of her baking the most beautiful cakes without any fancy equipment—just pure love and intuition. I used to sit in the kitchen watching her, completely mesmerised.

Years later, I baked my batch of cupcakes with a Betty Crooker mix when I was in Class 11. It was basic. It wasn’t perfect. But it sparked something in me. From that moment, baking became my escape, my happy place and eventually… my purpose. I never imagined it would become my full-time career—but that’s the beauty of doing what you love. One cake can change everything.

2. Did you study baking or content creation professionally?

No, I didn’t. I studied Political Science at Hindu College, Delhi University. I taught myself to bake by experimenting in my kitchen and learning from my mistakes (and trust me, there were a lot of them!). I went to Bombay in my summer break to intern with my now dearest friend Pooja Dhingra at Le 15. That always build the foundation for me.

The same goes for content. I didn’t take classes—I just started creating, posting and learning on the go. The internet is your biggest classroom if you’re willing to learn and stay consistent.

3. How do you constantly come up with fresh baking ideas?

Inspiration is everywhere. Seasonal fruits at the market, Pinterest scrolls, travel experiences or even my morning coffee. But the secret is—I don’t wait for ideas to magically appear. I sit down, brainstorm, test and sometimes fail.

Creativity isn’t luck. It’s a habit. I treat it like a muscle. The more I work it, the stronger it gets.

4. What camera do you use to shoot your content?

I majorly use my Iphone 15 Pro Mx for shooting all my recipe video and photos. I currently use a Canon 90D for photographing my desserts, but I started with my phone. And honestly? That was more than enough. You don’t need the best gear. What matters most is lighting, composition and story.

If your content tells a story and feels authentic, people will connect with it—even if it’s filmed on your phone in your bedroom kitchen.

5. What’s your go-to comfort dessert?

*Classic Chocolate Cake. Always. *

It’s the one dessert I come back to—when I’m celebrating, when I’m overwhelmed or just need a baking hug. There’s something timeless and grounding about it. It smells like home, feels like joy and tastes like everything is going to be okay.

I’ve baked a hundred versions of it, but the feeling it brings? That never changes.

6. How do you balance baking with creating content for Instagram, YouTube and more?

It took me time to figure this out. Baking is creative, but content creation is strategy. You have to plan ahead, batch shoot, write, edit and engage—all while staying inspired.

I’ve built a system with my team now, but in the early days, it was just me. If you’re starting solo, my advice is: start small, plan weekly and don’t burn out trying to be everywhere at once. Progress > perfection.

7. How do you deal with baking failures or recipe flops?

I embrace them. I’ve had cookies burn, cakes sink, and frostings split right before a shoot. But over time, I’ve learned—*if you’re failing, you’re learning*. Failures are just data points. They teach you what not to do and that’s powerful. Some of my best recipes today exist because a version before them went wrong.

8. What’s the secret to growing on Instagram or YouTube?

Be consistent, but more importantly—be clear about what you want to share. Whether it’s baking, lifestyle or tutorials, your content should reflect you.

People don’t just follow for recipes—they follow for the person. Your voice, your journey, your energy. The moment you stop trying to copy and start creating from your own space, growth follows.

9. How do you stay motivated in such a competitive space?

I focus on why I started. Not to get followers or viral videos—but to share the joy of baking. Whenever I feel burnt out or stuck, I go back to baking something simple—just for myself. No cameras. No pressure.

This space will always be competitive, but your story is your power. That’s what makes you stand out.

10. One piece of advice for aspiring bakers or creators?

* Start before you’re ready.*
You don’t need the perfect recipe, kitchen or camera. You just need a starting point. I didn’t have it all figured out either. I still don’t sometimes. But I showed up—and you can too.

Build slowly, learn constantly and don’t let fear stop you from sharing your passion. Someone out there is waiting to be inspired by you.

Thank you for reading! If this helped or resonated, let me know in the comments or drop me a DM—I love connecting with you all. And if you’re baking something today, tag me on Instagram! I’d love to see it.

Happy baking!!
