I am very happy to share with all of you that I have launched a new series on my Youtube channel! It is called the ‘’How To Series’’ and I am extremely excited for all of you to see it! Every time I share a recipe video on my Youtube channel, I get a lot of questions about various things and more often than not, I also get the same questions again and again. This is why I decided to do this series and answer all your questions in detail. The first episode had to be the most frequently asked question ever! And that is how to bake a cake in a microwave!
I understand that a lot of you do not have ovens at home and this is why everytime I share a recipe, you all ask me whether you can make that in a microwave and how to do the same. Baking a cake in a microwave is super easy, and can be used for any cake recipe! Yes, you read that right. You can make any cake you like in a microwave.
Even in microwaves, some of you might have convection microwaves and some of you might have non convection microwaves. Majority of people think that baking a cake in a microwave can only be done in a convection microwave but that is just not true. Read on and you’ll see that a normal heating mode on a microwave will also bake a cake just fine!
Is a Convection Microwave necessary for baking a cake?
If you don’t have a convection microwave, you can still make a cake in the normal heating mode. Here, it becomes important to note that you can only use microwave safe cookware. This includes a microwave safe glass cake dish or a silicon baking item.
Make sure to not use the steel rack here that usually comes with microwaves, because it is unsafe to use in the normal heating mode. Just keep the microwave safe glass dish on the revolving plate and bake the cake.
Making a cake in the normal heating only takes 5- 7 minutes. So take care of the timings and the texture will be slightly different. Your cake might also be dry. To fix that, you can soak it in a sugar syrup and turn it into a moist cake.
What are the steps to bake on the convection mode?
When you put your microwave on the convection mode, it starts functioning like an oven.
First things first, put your microwave on the convection mode. To do that you need to :
Preheating
Cooking
Make sure that your batter is ready to be put in the microwave as soon as the microwave is done preheating because the microwave will only retain that temperature for 10mins. Once you’ve put the cake pan inside, you need to do the entire process again. Set the microwave on the convection mode, set your temperature and this time you also need to fix your time. Remember that when using a convection microwave, baking time gets reduced by 25%. For example, if a cake takes 30mins to bake in an oven, it would take 7.5 mins less in a convection microwave. So set your time accordingly.
Cooling Down
Once your cake is ready, take it out of the microwave and let it cool down completely. Press the stop button and make sure to not switch off the microwave from the main switch. While it’s cooling down, it’ll make a sound. Once the sound stops, it means the microwave has cooled down.
That’s it. That is how easy it is to make a cake in a microwave. You can use any of my cake recipes and bake them in the microwave using these steps. The cake will come out beautifully!
Is it possible to bake other things in the microwave?
Yes! You can bake a lot of different things in the microwave. Cookies and mug cakes are a great option. I have shared so many mug cakes recipes with all of you, it’s insane. There is something for every flavor lover. You should definitely try those out.

Hi Shivesh, I am a self taught cook and exploring baking now. I dont have an oven but have recently baked a christmas cake in an oven. I relax by viewing reciped on youtube and keep saving EASY LESS ingredient ones. I chanced to see one of your recipes and am HOOKED 🙂 love the simplicity. I have been making no bake mango cheese cake with home made cheese cake – using a home made cream cheese recipe from BIGGER BOLDER BAKING but will use your recipe next time. I am all for using home made ingredients and love that you make baking so simple. I prefer following Indian bakers/chefs because the ingredients used are easily available. I have also been successful in whipping amul cream by CHILLING IT first and taking the top 75% of the cream (basically using the heavy cream bit and leaving out the thin portion) from the container. then i use a double utensil filled with ice and whip it with a hand blender.. it blends beautifully. I am going to try your carrot cake soon.. thanks for all that you do.. enjoy your you tube recipes very much..regards,

I made a pound cake in microwave convection mode. However, the bottom of the cake wasn’t cooked likt the top. How can I make a cake cook both at the top & bottom in microwave convection oven?
CHARMAINE luis says
Hi Shivesh,
I own a LG microwave oven 4048GW. Which doesn’t require preheating. The book doesn’t detail how to use the oven mode.
Is it possible to help me out ….as I had done a few cakes and a roast chicken ….using the MICRO option as mentioned in the manual book for cakes so pressed micro twice which comes to 80% and since its mentioned 70% for cakes I brought it down to 60…as I couldn’t get it to 70.
Appreciate your reply to my query
