7 Hot Chocolate Trends You Need to Try This Season

There is something about a cup of hot chocolate that makes even an ordinary day feel a little special. And while a classic cup of hot cocoa will always have my heart, hot chocolate has become so much more than just chocolate stirred into warm milk.

From thick, French-style drinking chocolate to mugs topped with toasted marshmallow fluff, the internet has found countless ways to make this winter favourite even more indulgent. Think chocolate shards, cookie dough, flaky croissants and even a hot chocolate affogato!

The best part? You don’t always need to visit a café to try these trends. With a good hot chocolate base, a few ingredients and a little creativity, you can recreate these delicious drinks right in your kitchen.

If you love experimenting with chocolate as much as I do, here are seven hot chocolate trends worth trying this season.

1. Viral NYC Marshmallow Fluff Hot Chocolate

If there is one hot chocolate trend that proves presentation matters just as much as taste, it is the viral New York City marshmallow fluff hot chocolate.

Imagine a cup of rich, warm chocolate topped with a generous layer of marshmallow fluff. The topping is toasted until golden and slightly caramelised, creating that beautiful contrast between a soft, gooey marshmallow layer and the warm chocolate underneath.

It is sweet, creamy, comforting and incredibly satisfying. The toasted marshmallow adds a subtle caramelised flavour that makes every sip feel like drinking a s’more.

How to try it at home: Prepare your favourite hot chocolate, add marshmallow fluff on top and toast it carefully using a kitchen torch. Finish with a little grated chocolate or crushed biscuits for extra texture.

2. Cookie Dough Hot Chocolate

Chocolate and cookie dough are two desserts that are difficult to resist individually. Put them together, and you have a drink that feels like dessert in a mug.

Cookie dough hot chocolate combines a creamy chocolate drink with the familiar flavours of buttery cookie dough, vanilla and chocolate chips. Depending on how you like it, you can add a small scoop of edible cookie dough, swirl it into your drink or use it as a topping with whipped cream and chocolate chips.

The combination works because every sip brings together the richness of hot chocolate and the sweet, buttery flavour of cookies.

How to try it at home: Make a cup of hot chocolate, top it with whipped cream and add small pieces of edible cookie dough and chocolate chips. Always use an edible cookie dough recipe made without raw flour or untreated eggs.

If you enjoy baking cookies at home, this is also a fun way to experiment with the flavours of your favourite cookie recipes in a completely different form.

3. Hot Chocolate in a Croissant

Why choose between your favourite pastry and a cup of hot chocolate when you can have both?

This trend takes inspiration from the classic French combination of croissants and drinking chocolate. A buttery, flaky croissant is dipped into rich hot chocolate, allowing the crisp pastry layers to soak up just enough chocolate without losing their texture.

Some versions take the idea further by filling or serving croissants with warm chocolate, turning the entire experience into an indulgent breakfast or dessert.

The magic lies in the contrast. You get crisp, golden pastry on the outside, soft layers on the inside and rich chocolate in every bite.

How to try it at home: Warm a fresh croissant slightly, prepare a cup of thick hot chocolate and dip away. For an extra indulgent version, drizzle melted chocolate over the croissant or serve it with chocolate sauce on the side.

This is one trend I would happily turn into a slow weekend breakfast. Add a cup of coffee or hot chocolate, and you have a café-style treat without leaving home.

4. French-Style Hot Chocolate

French hot chocolate, also known as chocolat chaud, is for anyone who likes their chocolate rich, silky and intensely chocolatey.

Unlike a lighter, everyday hot cocoa, the traditional French-inspired version is often made with real chocolate and milk, giving it a thicker consistency and a deeper chocolate flavour. It is usually served in smaller portions because it is closer to a drinking dessert than an ordinary beverage.

The appeal is in its simplicity. There are no elaborate toppings or complicated flavour combinations to distract you. Just a beautifully smooth chocolate drink that feels luxurious with every sip.

How to try it at home: Warm milk in a saucepan and whisk in finely chopped dark chocolate until it melts completely. Keep the heat low and stir until the mixture is smooth and glossy. For a thicker consistency, let it simmer gently while stirring.

You can also use a good hot chocolate premix as your starting point for a quick, everyday version. If you want a more traditional, intensely chocolatey result, add some finely chopped chocolate and adjust the consistency to your liking.

Serve it with a croissant, a simple butter cookie or a slice of chocolate cake.

5. Viral London Hot Chocolate with Chocolate Shards

If you love a little drama in your desserts, this trend is for you.

The viral London-style hot chocolate is all about creating a visually striking drink using chocolate shards. Instead of simply adding cocoa powder or chocolate sauce, this version features pieces of chocolate arranged around or over the cup, creating an eye-catching finish.

As the chocolate softens and melts into the warm drink, it adds another layer of chocolate flavour and makes the entire experience feel extra indulgent.

It is also a great reminder that sometimes the smallest details can turn a familiar recipe into something special.

How to try it at home: Prepare a creamy cup of hot chocolate and arrange thin chocolate shards on top or around the rim of your serving glass, ensuring they are stable. You can make your own shards by spreading melted chocolate into a thin layer, allowing it to set and breaking it into irregular pieces.

Finish with chocolate curls or a light dusting of cocoa powder if you like.

This is a lovely idea for entertaining, especially when you want to serve something that looks straight out of a dessert café.

6. Triple Chocolate Hot Chocolate

For those days when one kind of chocolate simply isn’t enough, triple chocolate hot chocolate is the answer.

As the name suggests, this drink brings together three forms of chocolate to create a rich, layered flavour. You can use cocoa powder, melted milk chocolate and dark chocolate, or finish your drink with white chocolate for an extra creamy contrast.

The result is a deliciously chocolatey drink with different layers of sweetness and intensity. You can keep it simple or go all out with whipped cream, chocolate sauce, chocolate curls and a generous sprinkle of chocolate chips.

How to try it at home: Start with a cup of hot chocolate and whisk in some melted dark or milk chocolate. Finish with a drizzle of white chocolate and your favourite toppings.

The trick is to balance the different chocolates so that the drink remains rich without becoming overwhelmingly sweet. Dark chocolate is particularly useful here because its deeper flavour balances the sweetness of milk and white chocolate.

If you are a serious chocolate lover, this is one recipe you will want to keep coming back to.

7. Hot Chocolate Affogato

An affogato traditionally brings together a scoop of ice cream and a shot of hot espresso. The hot chocolate affogato gives this classic dessert a chocolate-forward twist.

Picture a scoop of vanilla ice cream in a glass, with warm, rich hot chocolate poured over it. The ice cream begins to melt into the chocolate, creating a creamy combination of hot and cold textures.

It is simple, requires very little preparation and feels like a dessert you would order at a café.

How to try it at home: Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream to a small serving glass. Pour warm hot chocolate over it just before serving and finish with chocolate shavings or crushed biscuits.

For a more intense flavour, use dark chocolate in your drink. If you prefer something sweeter, vanilla ice cream and milk chocolate make a delicious combination.

Serve immediately, while the chocolate is warm and the ice cream is still cold.

How to Make Café-Style Hot Chocolate at Home

Looking at these trends, one thing becomes clear: a good hot chocolate is the starting point for endless possibilities.

You can dress it up with marshmallow fluff, pair it with a buttery croissant, add different kinds of chocolate or pour it over ice cream. The toppings and combinations can change, but the base needs to be delicious.

That is exactly why I love having a good hot chocolate premix in my kitchen. It makes preparing a comforting cup of chocolate much easier, especially when I want something warm and indulgent without spending too much time measuring ingredients or standing over the stove.

My Hot Chocolate Premix is made with premium cocoa and real chocolate bits, giving you a thick, café-style hot chocolate that you can enjoy at home. Each pack makes approximately 7–8 cups, making it perfect for cosy evenings, weekend baking sessions or sharing with friends and family.

Here’s how to make it:

  1. Add 3 tablespoons (approximately 35 g) of hot chocolate premix to 150 ml of milk.
  2. Heat on the stovetop for 2–3 minutes, stirring until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
  3. Alternatively, microwave for 60 seconds, stir and heat for another 30–40 seconds as needed, keeping an eye on the milk to prevent it from overflowing.
  4. Pour into your favourite mug and enjoy as it is, or use it as the base for one of the hot chocolate trends above.

Want to try the trends yourself? Start with the classic version, then experiment with marshmallows, chocolate shards, whipped cream or your favourite toppings.

Final Thoughts

Hot chocolate is one of those little pleasures that never really goes out of style. What changes is how we enjoy it.

One day, it is a simple mug of hot cocoa on a cold evening. The next, it is a thick French-style chocolate drink, a marshmallow-topped creation or a dessert served with a buttery croissant.

And that is what makes these trends so much fun. You do not need fancy equipment or a long list of ingredients to try something new. Sometimes, all you need is a good cup of hot chocolate and a little imagination.

So, which of these seven hot chocolate trends would you try first? I would love to know!
