Milk toast is one of those comforting dishes that instantly feels like a warm hug on a plate. It’s a nostalgic recipe that evokes memories of cozy mornings, where the smell of buttery bread and sweetened milk fills the kitchen. At its core, milk toast is a delightful balance of soft, pillowy bread soaked in a creamy, sweet mixture, but this recipe takes it to a whole new level of indulgence. I made the best use of this recipe and the strawberry season to make my new favourite version – Strawberry Nutella Milk Toast.
Imagine layers of bread slathered generously with rich, velvety Nutella, topped with vibrant slices of fresh strawberries, and then gently cooked to golden perfection. It’s the perfect combination of textures: the crisp golden edges of the bread, the meltingly soft center, and the juicy bursts of strawberries in every bite. And let’s not forget the finishing touches—a drizzle of Nutella and more fresh strawberries that make it feel like a dessert disguised as breakfast.
Whether you’re making this for a special weekend brunch or simply treating yourself to a midweek pick-me-up, milk toast is a dish that feels both indulgent and approachable. It’s a recipe that invites creativity, allowing you to adapt it to your personal preferences, while still delivering a classic combination of comforting flavors. One bite of this and you’ll be reminded that sometimes, the simplest ingredients can create the most magical dishes.

INGREDIENTS USED IN STRAWBERRY NUTELLA MILK TOAST
Bread
Bread serves as the main structural component of the recipe, holding the layers of strawberry slices and soaking up the milk mixture without disintegrating. The bread’s ability to absorb the milk and condensed milk mixture is crucial for creating the signature soft and moist texture inside while maintaining a crispy exterior. It soaks up the sweetness and creamy flavor, ensuring that every bite is rich and indulgent.
While relatively neutral in flavor, the bread complements the natural sweetness of the bananas and the richness of the condensed milk. It allows these flavors to shine while adding its own mild, toasty taste.
Different types of bread (e.g., brioche, whole wheat, sourdough) can influence the overall flavor and texture of the dish, allowing for versatility based on personal preference. Choosing the right bread ensures the final result is both delicious and structurally sound. However, for this recipe, I have used regular bread.
Strawberries
Fresh strawberries add a tart and fruity contrast to the sweetness of Nutella and the milk mixture. Their bright, juicy texture balances the richness of the toast, creating a harmonious blend of flavors. Thinly sliced strawberries also add visual appeal, making the dish vibrant and inviting. Fresh strawberries on top not only enhance the visual presentation but also add a refreshing burst of flavor, tying the whole dish together with a mix of sweetness and tartness.
Nutella
Nutella acts as the star flavor, providing a rich, chocolate-hazelnut sweetness that pairs beautifully with the strawberries. It binds the layers of bread together and adds creaminess to each bite. Its smooth texture melts slightly during cooking, enhancing the indulgent nature of the toast.

Milk
The Milk , combined with condensed milk, is poured over the toasted sandwich, soaking into the bread to add much-needed moisture. It serves as the base for soaking the bread, adding moisture and creaminess to the toast. It softens the bread and helps create a rich, pudding-like texture. Warm milk also enhances the overall flavor by allowing the bread to absorb the sweetness evenly. Using whole milk gives a creamier result, but any milk type can work depending on dietary preferences.
The sugars and fats in the milk mixture can aid in browning the bread, giving it a beautiful golden color and adding a hint of caramelized flavor during the toasting process.
Condensed milk
Condensed milk adds a rich, creamy sweetness to the recipe. When mixed with regular milk, condensed milk thickens the soaking liquid, giving the bread a custard-like consistency.
Condensed milk brings sweetness and a silky texture to the milk mixture. Its rich, caramelized flavor complements the Nutella and strawberries, adding depth to the dish. The thickness of condensed milk also helps the liquid mixture coat the bread more evenly, ensuring a perfectly sweet and luscious toast.
Butter
Butter prevents the toast from sticking to the pan and adds a golden, crisp finish to the exterior. Its creamy, nutty flavor enhances the overall richness of the dish and ensures even browning during cooking. Using unsalted butter allows better control of the dish’s sweetness.

TIPS TO MAKE STRAWBERRY NUTELLA MILK TOAST
- Warm the milk slightly before mixing it with condensed milk. This helps the condensed milk dissolve more evenly.
- If you want the toast to have more flavor, consider adding a pinch of cinnamon, vanilla extract, or a small pinch of salt to the milk mixture.
- Stale bread works well for this recipe since it absorbs the milk mixture without falling apart.
- Slice the strawberries thinly and pat them dry with a paper towel to avoid adding excess moisture to the toast.
- If the toast absorbs the milk too quickly and feels soggy, cook it for a minute or two longer to allow excess moisture to evaporate.
- Replace Nutella with peanut butter, almond butter, or a chocolate spread for a different flavor. Add a sprinkle of chopped nuts (like hazelnuts or almonds) on top for a crunchy texture. Experiment with other fruits like bananas, raspberries, or blueberries.
