ICED MOCHA

Out of every coffee drink I make, this iced mocha is hands down my favourite. It’s one of those recipes I never get tired of because it brings together everything I love in a single glass—bold coffee, rich chocolate, a hint of sweetness, and an irresistibly creamy finish. It tastes like something you’d order from your favourite café, but it’s incredibly easy to recreate at home.

What makes this drink so special is the balance of flavours. The coffee gives it that much-needed caffeine kick, while the cocoa and melted chocolate add a deep, chocolatey richness without overpowering the drink. A tiny pinch of sea salt might seem like a small addition, but it enhances both the coffee and chocolate, making every sip taste even more indulgent. The oat milk keeps it smooth and creamy, while the light chocolate cream foam on top adds a luxurious finish that makes the drink feel extra special.

I find myself making this recipe all year round, but especially during warmer months when I want something refreshing without giving up my daily coffee. It’s the perfect afternoon pick-me-up, whether I’m editing videos, developing new baking recipes, or simply taking a break. It’s satisfying enough to feel like a treat, yet light enough that I never feel weighed down after finishing it.

If you’re someone who loves both coffee and chocolate and can never decide between the two, this recipe gives you the best of both worlds. It’s rich without being overly sweet, refreshing without being watery, and every layer works together to create a perfectly balanced iced drink. Once you try it, there’s a good chance it’ll become one of your favourites too.

WHAT YOU’LL LOVE ABOUT THIS

  • Perfect summer drink
  • Best for coffee and chocolate lovers
  • Easy to make

INGREDIENTS USED TO MAKE ICED MOCHA

  • Coffee

Instant coffee forms the heart of this recipe, providing a bold, robust flavour and the caffeine kick that makes an iced mocha so satisfying. Since it’s dissolved directly into water, it creates a smooth, concentrated coffee base that blends perfectly with the chocolate. Use your favourite instant coffee for the best flavour, as the quality of the coffee makes a noticeable difference.

  • Cocoa Powder

Cocoa powder adds a deep chocolate flavour without making the drink overly rich. It gives the mocha its signature chocolatey taste while keeping the texture light and smooth. Good-quality cocoa powder will produce a more intense and balanced flavour.

  • Brown Sugar

Brown sugar sweetens the drink while contributing subtle caramel and molasses notes that pair beautifully with both the coffee and chocolate. It creates a more rounded flavour than regular white sugar and enhances the overall richness of the mocha.

  • Sea Salt

A small pinch of sea salt may seem insignificant, but it plays an important role. It enhances the flavours of both the coffee and chocolate, balances the sweetness, and adds depth to every sip. It’s a simple ingredient that makes a surprisingly big difference.

  • Oat Milk

Oat milk adds a naturally creamy texture and subtle sweetness that complements the chocolate beautifully. Its smooth consistency makes it one of the best plant-based milks for coffee drinks, creating a balanced mocha without overpowering the coffee. If preferred, dairy milk or another milk of your choice can also be used.

  • Whipping Cream

Rather than simply pouring cream over the drink, whipping it creates a light, airy foam that floats beautifully on top. The whipped cream gradually blends into the coffee as you drink, making every sip richer and creamier while maintaining a light texture.

  • Melted Chocolate

Melted chocolate gives the foam an extra layer of richness and creates a true mocha flavour. It also helps produce a silky, luxurious finish that makes the drink taste even more indulgent. Dark chocolate offers a deeper flavour, while milk chocolate can be used if you prefer a sweeter mocha.

EQUIPMENTS USED IN MAKING ICED MOCHA

Measuring Cups and Measuring Spoons are an integral part of any baker’s kitchen and it’s very important to measure ingredients with precision.

Frother is required to make the foam and iced mocha base.

TIPS TO MAKE ICED MOCHA

  1. Use good-quality instant coffee. Since coffee is the star of the drink, using a brand you enjoy will make a noticeable difference in the final flavour.
  2. Froth the coffee mixture well. Whisking or frothing the coffee, cocoa, sugar, and water together creates a smoother, more evenly blended base with a slightly creamy texture.
  3. Adjust the sweetness to your taste. If you prefer a stronger coffee flavour, reduce the brown sugar slightly. For a sweeter café-style mocha, add an extra teaspoon of sugar or use milk chocolate instead of dark chocolate.
  4. Use chilled oat milk. Cold milk keeps the drink refreshing and helps maintain the beautiful layers when poured over the ice.
  5. Fill the glass generously with ice. More ice keeps the drink colder for longer and prevents it from becoming diluted too quickly.
  6. Don’t overwhip the cream. Whip it just until it thickens slightly and becomes pourable. Overwhipping can make it too stiff to float smoothly over the drink.
  7. Allow the melted chocolate to cool slightly. If it’s too hot, it can cause the cream to seize or lose its smooth texture.
  8. Pour the oat milk gently over the ice. This helps create distinct layers for a café-style presentation before topping with the chocolate cream.
  9. Serve immediately. Iced mochas are best enjoyed fresh while the ice is intact and the chocolate foam is light and airy.
  10. Experiment with chocolate. Dark chocolate gives a richer, more intense mocha, while milk chocolate creates a sweeter, creamier drink.
  11. For an extra café touch, dust the top with a little cocoa powder, grated chocolate, or chocolate shavings just before serving.
